Know what that's like, I was using a Kodak Z1275 for ages before upgrading to a Canon DLSR. The highest manual settings I could get it to was f/8! LOL. Even try taking it using HDR (3-exposures), that way you'll get perfect exposure every time. You should have an AEB setting on your camera in the menu, simple as .
